Scams and Scholarships

Scholarships can be so helpful to the college tuition fight. Scholarships are something that are different then the ability to consolidate federal student loan, but they are helpful none the less. Unfortunately there are people out there who want to scam you of your money. This can even trickled over in the world of scholarships. The following are some scams that you must watch out for.

Give Them Your Credit Card

If you are applying for a scholarship then you should never give them your credit card. There are the ones who are giving you money, and they do not need access to your account. The only time your account should come into play is if they are direct depositing the funds into your account. Your credit card should not be their business.

Give Them Money

Some places promise to get you a scholarship if you sign up with them...for a small fee. Again, you are the one who should be receiving the money. There are plenty of scholarship opportunities out there that are free to sign up for. Do not just start handing money away to try and get scholarships. Before you know it you could be out a significant amount.

You Are Now a Finalist

If you receive something in the mail saying that you are a finalist for a scholarship you need to first make sure you signed up for it. Legit scholarships do not need to go searching to recipients; they have people banging down their door. If you do not know what this scholarship is for and you did not sign up for it, then it is best to forget about it this time.

Scholarships are Meant to Help

If at any time you feel like a scholarship is not helping you, and is looking to control you then you should step away from it. Scholarships should only be in a position where you can use them to your advantage. Scholarships should not be helping the people that are providing them to you. Just keep a watchful eye out when dealing with scholarships, because even they can fall victim to scammers.
